This workshop invites people of all backgrounds and skill levels to experience collective music improvisation as a vibrant social activity and a tool for community building. Led by Brooklyn‑based vocal improviser, composer, and educator Kyoko Kitamura (known for her work with Anthony Braxton, William Parker, Siren Xypher Collective, and the Brooklyn Free Spirit Festival), we begin with simple, body‑centered practices using breath, long tones, and rhythmic games to bring awareness to the nonverbal cues that surround us. Then we explore non‑conventional notation and graphic scores in ways inspired by the Scratch Orchestra’s philosophy of inclusivity, so that each participant becomes both improviser and composer within a shared space where listening to each other is the primary score. Participants will be encouraged and gently guided to create their own scores if they so wish. Composers we will explore (as time allows) include Anthony Braxton, Jay Clayton, Garrett List, Cornelius Cardew, Malcolm Goldstein, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, and more. In this supportive space, there are no wrong notes. Instruments welcome but not required. Advanced musicians are encouraged to use the session to explore conducted improvisation, ensemble leading, and other non‑verbal exchanges.
