Sing the Way you Speak!

This past session of the Jazz Vocal Workshop was super fun! I think we’re beginning to hit our stride as the students settle into the format and to their music. Plus we’re still growing, with another full house with a new student visiting from Italy.

I mentioned in the last post that in every workshop we’ll have a topic to focus on before performing and this week we focused on singing the way you speak, part of a long and involved process of getting to the heart of personal song interpretation. By pulling the works away from the melody, looking at how ways to connect the way we speak (cadence, sounds, pauses) to the way we phrase our music to get in touch with our unique perspective. How would YOU say the same words if you spoke them?
Always amazing what happens to the students during this exercise and what it reveals for them! For time restraints, everyone only focused on one 8-bar section of their tune and when we got to the performance, the students enjoyed trying to phrase their music along these new contours with fascinating results.
Till the next time!
