Weekly Workshops

Weekly jazz workshops are ongoing classes for adult students (17 and up) organized by level and musical style. They can be joined at any time according to availability. All classes have a hands-on approach, and every week students will learn important musical techniques in an ensemble setting. Maximum 7 students per class. Students will perform recitals in jazz venues around NYC twice per year. The workshops are listed by the day of the week. For a one page overview please visit our calendar.

Setting the STAGE for vocal with FAY VICTOR: This is a Jazz Vocal Workshop for intermediate to advanced singers who would like to improve their vocal skills with a true professional. Art of the Jam Session 2: Straight Eighth, ECM, and Latin FRIDAYS 6pm
The focus of this class in essence is to recreate the NYC Jam session playing experience and explore all the typical encounters related to the typical “live” jam session environment. The material will be drawn from the standard latin jazz compositions, modern approaches to standards with straight eighth grooves as well as modern jazz compositions from the ECM style repertoire
Blues and beyond lead by Dave Scott
Blues and Beyond FRIDAYS 6pm
Blues and Beyond from the blues form to jazz standards. Meet, play and learn with other enthusiastic musicians. This class introduces students to the world of improvisation through interplay in an ensemble setting (max class size 7 students). Intro to Jazz Improvisation 1 SUNDAYS 12pm
Intro to Jazz Improvisation is expertly lead by saxophonist/composer Darius Jones. This ongoing course offers a path for musicians to enter the world of jazz improvisation. In a welcoming and non-judgmental environment, participants will be encouraged to play and improvise. During the class Darius Jones will demonstrate and teach various devises such as scales, modes, chords, various tunes and chord progressions. With KENNY WESSEL This Guitar Ensemble will work with 4-5 guitarists playing arrangements for guitar. We will focus on important musical skills: playing as a section, blending, phrasing, time feel, soloing, comping, improvisation, in addition to working on a weak point for many guitarists, sight-reading.
