Biography
Joe Fonda is an internationally acclaimed bassist, composer, recording artist, producer, and educator. A faculty member at the New York Jazz Workshop since May 2025, he brings a rich legacy of global performance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative music-making. Fonda has performed and recorded extensively with leading voices in avant-garde jazz, including Anthony Braxton, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, Leo Smith, Han Bennink, Dave Douglas, Carla Bley, and many others.
From 1984 to 1999, Fonda was the bassist in Anthony Braxton’s celebrated ensembles, including his sextet, octet, and tentet, and performed in the premiere of Braxton’s opera Shalla Fears for the Poor. He also served as President of the Tri-Centric Foundation, supporting experimental composition and performance.
A prolific composer and bandleader, Fonda has released over a dozen recordings under his own name, with grants and commissions from Meet the Composer and the New England Foundation for the Arts. He has toured globally with groups such as the Fonda-Stevens Group, The Nu Band, Conference Call, The FAB Trio, and Bottoms Out, appearing at major festivals across Europe, North America, and Asia.
His projects often cross disciplinary boundaries. From the Source merges music with tap dance and healing arts, while the Off Road Quartet unites artists from four countries, blending diverse musical traditions into a singular sound experience. Fonda is also the founder of Kaleidoscope Arts, an interdisciplinary performance ensemble, and served as musical director for the Connecticut Composers and Improvisers Festival from 2001 to 2011.
