Inside a Jazz Combo Class

Expect More From Your Ensemble

What will you get from a New York Jazz Workshop combo class? A chance to learn in an intimate setting with long-established instructors and passionate students in the heart of Manhattan. A community you can lean on and be vulnerable with. Both of which are more than what some have come to expect from jazz instruction.

Every New York Jazz Workshop combo class and instructor works in direct opposition to anything resembling an intimidating or alienating jazz experience. Each weekly class provides invaluable emotional scaffolding that pairs with in-depth musical instruction to create a supportive communal learning environment. Looking to join an instrumental trio that takes a deep dive into bebop essentials? You’re in the right place. Do you want to be part of a septet featuring a vocalist with an emphasis on swinging ballads? We’re ready for you.

So what can you expect from a jazz combo class each week? You can count on an instructor who knows the real book cover to cover. One who has shared the stage with legends, but who also doesn’t make you feel like you don’t belong in the room next to them. You’ll play with students who match your skill level and your enthusiasm to grow as a musician. If you’re truly committed, you’ll also deepen your knowledge of the art form and create a closer relationship with your instrument. We hope you’ll leave every class with a better understanding of yourself as a jazz musician.

Here are answers to some of the most popular questions prospective students often ask before signing up for a jazz combo class at our midtown Manhattan location:

What will I play?

There are a variety of jazz sub-genres, seminal eras, and specific techniques you can explore depending on the combo you choose to join. Your instructor will guide you on your journey and lay out all the details for what you’ll need to prepare and play during each class.

Who calls the tunes?

This is a true band experience. Your instructor will play the role of bandleader and suggest specific tunes based on the class and the level of the group. But every member has an equal say in what you all play. Make your voice heard. Call a tune the night before class or in the moment. Bring in charts of your original songs to work on with the band. It’s all in play and more than welcome.

How do I know if I’m at the right skill level?

Each jazz combo and group workshop is conveniently categorized by level to make it easy for you to find the perfect class. For a complete look at how to assess yourself for a weekly workshop, read this article.

What dos the instructor do during the class?

This isn’t a lecture hall, this is an all-hands-in band. Your instructor is a member of the group and will play every tune along with each student. They will also be the model for what an upstanding bandmember should be—vulnerable, generous, patient, and an excellent listener.

What happens if I get lost?

Making mistakes and getting lost in the form or while you’re taking a solo is all part of the learning process. Remember, you’re in a safe and supportive setting surrounded by people who are not only making mistakes themselves, but also there to lift you up when you stumble. If you get lost, play through it and discuss it with your instructor after the tune is over. If you can’t play through it, stop the song, regroup with the band, and start again like it’s a rehearsal.

New York Jazz Workshop is always updating class offerings and adding new faculty to help create a more diverse and comprehensive curriculum. We’re here to provide experienced mentorship. We want students to feel inspired and equipped to take on everything from navigating a late night jam session to crafting a 32-bar improvised solo.

Every jazz combo class is 2 hours and meets once a week at our midtown Manhattan location, 265 West 37th Street on the 10th floor, Suite #1004 (on the corner of 37th St and 8th Ave).
