Jazz for Piano – The Sound of Dorian

The Dorian mode has some unique yet subtle characteristics (Link). Let’s listen to a few audio examples. 

The Dorian scale. Listen for that characteristic sixth degree and a lack of pull the notes have to other notes.

Dorian 7ths. Again, listen for that lack of pull particularly on the VII degree (CM7)

Dorian cadence. This points out the ambiguity that I think attracted Davis and Coltrane.
