Step into the heart of Kyoto for an unforgettable week where the spirit of jazz intertwines with Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Kyoto Jazz Immersion 2025 is a thoughtfully curated experience designed for musicians and jazz enthusiasts eager to deepen their craft while exploring one of the world’s most historic and artistic cities.

This unique program is organized by Marco Chelo, New York Jazz Workshop Co-founder and experienced travel agent, whose passion for travel and dedication to creating cross-cultural musical experiences have inspired this remarkable journey. Joining Marco are two of the most respected jazz educators and artists from the New York Jazz Workshop faculty: Bassist Dave Ambrosio and NYJW Co-founder Marc Mommaas. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to guide participants through a transformative musical and cultural experience, enhanced by collaborations with talented local artists.

Throughout the program, you’ll engage in masterclasses and ensemble sessions with these world-class jazz musicians, culminating in a final concert featuring a special Japanese guest artist. Beyond the music, immerse yourself in Kyoto’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant festivals, and centuries-old traditions. From exploring serene temples and bustling artisan markets to savoring exquisite Japanese cuisine, this journey offers an inspiring blend of musical and cultural discovery.

The Schedule

Saturday, October 11th – Sunday, October 19th, 2025


Day 1(Saturday, October 11th)

  • Arrival in Kyoto
  • Evening: Welcome dinner featuring traditional Japanese cuisine

Day 2(Sunday, October 12th)

  • Morning: Group breakfast.
  • Masterclass for musicians – Jazz Rhythm Concepts + Jam Session.
  • Afternoon: Picnic at Lake Biwa Canal and temple visit.
  • Evening: Free Evening

Day 3(Monday, October 13th)

  • Morning: Breakfast .
  • Ensemble playing.
  • Afternoon: Visit Awata Taisai Festival.
  • Evening: Group dinner in Kyoto.

Day 4(Tuesday, October 14th)

  • Morning: Music Session
  • Afternoon: Visits to Shogunzuka, Honnouji, and/or Taimaji Temple
  • Evening: Dave performs with his group at Bochi Bochi ( optional)

Day 5(Wednesday, October 15th)

Day 6(Thursday, October 16th)

  • Morning: Ensemble session.
  • Lunch: Bento Box.
  • Afternoon: Trip to Osaka – Sightseeing and exploring the city.
  • Evening: Optional trip to Osaka at the jazz club Umeda Always, featuring a faculty performance and student jam session.

Day 7(Friday, October 17th)

  • Morning: Rehearsal for musicians.
  • Afternoon: Visit Okazaki Museum or shopping in Kyoto’s downtown area.
  • Evening: Free Evening

Day 8(Saturday, October 18th)

  • Morning: Breakfast and final preparations.
  • Evening: Final concert at the Otsu Jazz festival, followed by a post-concert celebration.

Day 9(Sunday, October 19th)

  • Morning: Farewell breakfast
  • Departure: Check out and transfer to the airport.

Our Hosts

Nori and Fumi are jazz enthusiasts based in Kyoto, Japan. They’ve participated in New York Jazz Workshop programs in Italy and Brazil, building connections within the jazz community.

As owners of a jazz café and studio in Kyoto, they’ve created a space where music and Japanese tradition come together. Their knowledge of both jazz and Kyoto’s cultural landscape make them the perfect guides for visiting musicians.

Nori and Fumi look forward to welcoming jazz students to Kyoto this October, helping create an experience that combines jazz education with cultural exploration. Their connections to local musicians, historic sites, and hidden spots will give participants the chance to develop their musical skills while experiencing the beauty and traditions of one of Japan’s most important cultural cities.
