This unique program is organized by Marco Chelo, New York Jazz Workshop Co-founder and experienced travel agent, whose passion for travel and dedication to creating cross-cultural musical experiences have inspired this remarkable journey. Joining Marco are two of the most respected jazz educators and artists from the New York Jazz Workshop faculty: Bassist Dave Ambrosio and NYJW Co-founder Marc Mommaas. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to guide participants through a transformative musical and cultural experience, enhanced by collaborations with talented local artists.
Throughout the program, you’ll engage in masterclasses and ensemble sessions with these world-class jazz musicians, culminating in a final concert featuring a special Japanese guest artist. Beyond the music, immerse yourself in Kyoto’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant festivals, and centuries-old traditions. Day 1: Saturday, October 11th
- Arrival in Kyoto
- Evening: Welcome dinner featuring traditional Japanese cuisine.
- Return to the hotel.
Day 2: Sunday, October 12th
- Morning: Group breakfast.
- 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Masterclass for musicians – Jazz Rhythm Concepts + Jam.
- 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Picnic at Lake Biwa Canal and temple visit.
- Evening: Group dinner.
- Return to the hotel.
Day 3: Monday, October 13th
- Morning: Breakfast .
- 9:30 AM – 12:30 AM: – Ensemble playing.
- Afternoon: Visit Awata Taisai Festival.
- Evening: Group dinner in Kyoto.
- Return to the hotel.
Day 4: Tuesday, October 14th
- Morning: Ensemble session.
- Lunch: Bento Box.
- Afternoon: Trip to Osaka – Sightseeing and exploring the city.
- Evening: Dinner in Osaka.
- Return to Kyoto and back to the hotel.
Day 5: Wednesday, October 15th
- Morning: Master Class – Learning & Memorizing Jazz Language. Ensemble session.
- Afternoon: Visit Chion-ji Temple Handicraft Market.
- Evening: Dinner at an Okinawan restaurant.
- Return to the hotel.
Day 6: Thursday, October 16th
- Morning: Free morning for shopping or museum visit. Suggested options:
- Afternoon: Music session and jam preparation.
- Evening: Dinner followed by jam sessions with faculty & local musicians.
- Return to the hotel.
Day 7: Friday, October 17th
- Morning: Rehearsal for musicians.
- Afternoon: Free time or shopping in Kyoto’s downtown area.
- Evening: Group dinner.

Day 8: Saturday, October 18th
- Morning: Breakfast and final preparations.
- Evening: Final concert with Japanese guest artist, followed by a post-concert celebration.

Course Only
The course-only option is available for Japanese music students aged 17 to 99 who wish to attend the jazz sessions and final concert with American jazz teachers. The program focuses on jazz ensemble playing, melody, rhythm, harmony, and improvisation. The cost for the course-only option is 85,000 yen. A submission of a jazz standard recording on your instrument of choice is required for admission.
