Welcome to the Afro-Cuban Jazz Improvisation workshop with Doug Beavers and Ivan Renta:
Led by Doug Beavers, Grammy winner for his arranging and trombone work with Eddie Palmieri, Afro-Cuban Jazz Improvisation Workshop is designed to introduce and foster the powers of Latin rhythms and clave in improvisation. When Doug is touring, Ivan Renta takes the helm of the workshop. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ivan Renta has become one of the premiere saxophonists in the Jazz, Latin Jazz and Latin Music Industry. His ability to adapt to any musical situation has landed him on stage at many of the world’s most prestigious venues and music festivals. His credentials include performances with artist such as Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon, Ron Carter, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Heath, Ray Barretto, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Bebo Valdez, to name a few. Mr. Renta has collaborated on three Grammy Award winning recordings

Topics covered will include, but are not limited, to:
• Introduction and discussion of Latin rhythms, clave and their history.
• Improvisation on simple tonic/dominant structures to comprehend the function of clave and tension/release.
• Study of phrasing.
• Transcriptions of key solos from the Afro-Cuban/Caribbean idiom, as originally performed by Barry Rodgers, Eddie Palmieri, Chocolate, Manny Oquendo, Chappotín, and others.
