SUMMER 2025 INTENSIVE
Brazilian Music Intensive workshop with Daniel Silva and special guest, Get hip to the sound and rhythms of Brazil. In this workshop, we will explore a variety of Brazilians styles, such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Partido Alto, Choro, Baião, Xote, Frevo, Maracatu and Ijexá.
About the Brazilian Music Intensive Summer Workshop
At the Brazilian Music Intensive Summer Workshop, musicians will have a chance to develop their skills on playing these styles, accompanying, improvising, and phrasing using the appropriate patterns, accents and articulations within each style. The repertoire will include pieces by composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Pixinguinha, Dominguinhos, Johnny Alf and other Brazilian master composers. This workshop is an intermediate level but can accommodate many musicians with varying background.
Topics:
– Repertoire approaching a variety of styles of Brazilian music
– Samba / Bossa-Nova / Choro / Baião / Frevo / Maxixe / Maracatu
– Understanding the role of each rhythmic section instrument
– Different rhythmic patterns for comping
– Understanding how the rhythmic patterns relate to the harmonic sequence, Brazilian “clave”?, 1-bar patterns, 2-bars patterns
– Phrasing and articulations appropriate for each style
– Improvisation: melodic and rhythmic ideas characteristic of the styles
– Understanding and feeling the Brazilian “swing”, uneven 16th-notes
Dates: Aug 19 – 22 (four days)
Prerequisites:
-At least 18 years of age
-A willingness to learn
-Instructors may ask for a recorded sample before admission
-Some of our intensives are better suited to intermediate and advanced musicians with a minimum of a few years on their instrument; other summer intensives, such as the beginner vocal and choir, are open to everyone. More details can be discussed during registration.
About the Faculty
Daniel Silva
This year’s instructor is Daniel Silva is a drummer with an international career across jazz, Brazilian music, big band, and Latin styles.
He has performed at the Stowe Jazz Festival (VT), CUNY Jazz Festival (NYC), Savassi Jazz Festival (BRA), All Jazz Festival (BRA), ViJazz (BRA), and Tudo é Jazz (BRA). His venue credits include Carnegie Hall, Smalls Jazz Club, Jazz Forum (NY), Minton’s Playhouse, B.B. King Blues Club, and stages in China, Italy, and Brazil.
Silva has worked with Vinícius Cantuária, Toninho Horta, Frank Lacy, Darcy James Argue, Alessio Menconi, and Neguinho da Beija-Flor, and has been a member of groups including Nogu Svelo, Dodo Orchestra, and Monika Oliveira & The Brazilians. As a recording artist, he appears on projects such as Música Livre by Douglas Braga, joining saxophonist Nailor Proveta as a guest.
His EP Minas Under Traffic connects the music of Minas Gerais with contemporary jazz and has been covered by All About Jazz, Jazz Corner, Brazilian Times, and Brazilian Press, with airplay on WBGO, WKCR, and Jazz FM (London).
An educator for more than 15 years, Silva holds a Master’s in Jazz Performance from Queens College (CUNY). He teaches at Rhythm NY School of Music and offers private lessons. He continues to perform, record, and teach in the U.S. and abroad.

What to expect:
When you join us for one or more of our intensives, you can expect to become a member of our tightly knit community. There will be musicians from all over the world looking to learn, explore and make connections. You will be making connections that last a lifetime. A typical day will be as follows:

12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch Break
1:00pm – 4:00pm: Afternoon Sessions
Evenings: Free
Student will normally organize small groups or go check out some concerts. See “Fun Evening Activities” in the General Information page for more details. There will be opportunities for every student to perform outside of the school, more details coming up soon.
