SUMMER 2025 INTENSIVE
Brazilian Music Intensive workshop with Eduardo Belo and special guest, Get hip to the sound and rhythms of Brazil. In this workshop, we will explore a variety of Brazilians styles, such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Partido Alto, Choro, Baião, Xote, Frevo, Maracatu and Ijexá.
About the Brazilian Music Intensive Summer Workshop
At the Brazilian Music Intensive Summer Workshop, musicians will have a chance to develop their skills on playing these styles, accompanying, improvising, and phrasing using the appropriate patterns, accents and articulations within each style. The repertoire will include pieces by composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Pixinguinha, Dominguinhos, Johnny Alf and other Brazilian master composers. This workshop is an intermediate level but can accommodate many musicians with varying background.
Topics:
– Repertoire approaching a variety of styles of Brazilian music
– Samba / Bossa-Nova / Choro / Baião / Frevo / Maxixe / Maracatu
– Understanding the role of each rhythmic section instrument
– Different rhythmic patterns for comping
– Understanding how the rhythmic patterns relate to the harmonic sequence, Brazilian “clave”?, 1-bar patterns, 2-bars patterns
– Phrasing and articulations appropriate for each style
– Improvisation: melodic and rhythmic ideas characteristic of the styles
– Understanding and feeling the Brazilian “swing”, uneven 16th-notes
Dates: Aug 19 – 22 (four days)
Prerequisites:
-At least 18 years of age
-A willingness to learn
-Instructors may ask for a recorded sample before admission
-Some of our intensives are better suited to intermediate and advanced musicians with a minimum of a few years on their instrument; other summer intensives, such as the beginner vocal and choir, are open to everyone. More details can be discussed during registration.
About the Faculty
Eduardo Belo
This year’s instructor is Eduardo Belo, a bass player and composer from Brasília, Brazil. From a young age, he’s been drawn to many different styles of music, and today he’s known for his versatility and deep musicality.
Eduardo has performed with a wide range of artists, including Michel Camilo, Romero Lubambo, Lee Konitz, Kevin Hays, Bebel Gilberto, Steve Wilson, Duduka da Fonseca, Pedro Martins, Chico Pinheiro, Ari Hoenig, Clarice Assad, Claudio Roditi, and Mario Adnet, among many others. Whether it’s Brazilian music, jazz, or something in between, Eduardo brings a strong voice and great feel to every project he’s part of.
He received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 and earned a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory. These days, he’s based in New York and stays busy performing, recording, and teaching both in the U.S. and internationally.
In 2024, Eduardo led the New York Jazz Workshop Brazilian Summer Intensive, where he shared his experience and love for Brazilian music with students from around the world. The workshop was a hit — participants praised his clear teaching style, inspiring playing, and deep knowledge of Brazilian rhythms and traditions.

What to expect:
When you join us for one or more of our intensives, you can expect to become a member of our tightly knit community. There will be musicians from all over the world looking to learn, explore and make connections. You will be making connections that last a lifetime. A typical day will be as follows:

12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch Break
1:00pm – 4:00pm: Afternoon Sessions
Evenings: Free
Student will normally organize small groups or go check out some concerts. See “Fun Evening Activities” in the General Information page for more details. There will be opportunities for every student to perform outside of the school, more details coming up soon.
