Flat 9 Chord Extensions

Flat 9 chord extensions are fairly common. We have examples here from a diverse group of composers including Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Carla Bley. Being just a semitone up from the tonic it adds lots of tension and drive to the one chord. There are examples of using it on dominant and minor chords.
